Worldwide First Serial Hybrid Propulsion System for Pleasure Boats presented at

The Frauscher Bootswerft will present a range of five different boat models which show a
perfect mix of style, design and environmental awareness at the upcoming Genua Boat
Show 2010. Exhibited will be the ultimate Day Cruiser the 909 Benaco, the European
Powerboat of the year 2010 the 717 GT, the classic 606 Riviera and two boat models which
are equipped with a Steyr Motors hybrid propulsion system the 757 St. Tropez and the 686
Lido. In order to get a full imagination of this special system, the engine itself will be
displayed on the booth as well.
The long standing collaboration between the Austrian companies STEYR MOTORS
( and Frauscher Bootswerft ( has
resulted in the exciting commercial launch of the worldwide first serial Hybrid Propulsion
System for pleasure boats at “Boot Düsseldorf” in January 2008.
Now two years later the Hybrid Propulsion System stepped up to the next level. This year
the Italian Frauscher partner, Cantiere Nautico Feltrinelli, has sold and delivered two
Frauscher boats equipped with a Steyr Motors hybrid propulsion system: at lake Garda, a
686 Lido with a hybrid engine is running as a taxi boat around the city Riva which is
surrounded by a motor boat prohibited area. Moreover a 757 St. Tropez with a hybrid
engine will be soon used in Venice.
Stefan Frauscher is very delighted about this development: “We see a high potential in this
market. Boat enthusiasts are getting more and more cautious regarding the enviroment
and we can offer the perfect boat which offers all needs: elegance, fun and environmental
Frauscher’s extensive experience with electric and combustion engines as well as their 80
years of boat building expertise have been of significant value to STEYR MOTORS and the
development process. STEYR MOTORS is well known for its low emission, light weight
Marine diesel engines with electronic engine management.
The environmentally friendly hybrid solution marks a new chapter in the history of pleasure
boat propulsion. It not only assures zero emission and low speed manoeuvring in harbours,
noiseless drive on inland waters and nature reserves, but also eliminates the need for
separate generator units for other onboard equipment. The “zero emission” electric drive
mode allows for a speed of 5 knots using solely electric propulsion and switches to the
combustion engine with an easy turn of the ignition key. The ingenious propulsion then
gets “boosted” by the electric drive and secures a quicker acceleration into the planning
phase lowering fuel consumption and improving response as well as dynamics.
Significantly reduced maintenance cost and improved ease of service, due to the brushless
permanent magnet generator, are further irrevocable arguments that STEYR MOTORS and
Frauscher Boats are introducing a serious technological novelty.
STEYR MOTORS perfects the handling with the Steyr Electronic Control Centre (SCC) that
regulates all of the driver’s demands and assures convenient monitoring of all operating
