J-Class: UK regatta series planned for 2012

The J-Class will gather en masse for spectacular regattas in the Olympic year. For the first time in history, more than four J-Class yachts will compete together as a fleet at three regattas around the English coast in 2012. The J-Class Association is planning regattas at Falmouth in Cornwall, in the Solent and, in the Solent again, racing the route of the 1851 ‘Hundred Guinea Cup Race’, now better known as the America’s Cup. The list of participants is a long way from being drawn up: but, as we have extensively covered in CB, the recent renaissance in J-Class yacht building in the Netherlands means there is no shortage of potential candidates. In addition to the three Charles Nicholson originals (Shamrock V, Velsheda and Endeavour), there is the steel Ranger replica built in 2002; Hanuman, a replica of Endeavour II launched last year; Lionheart, a different Ranger design currently in build and due for launching later this year; Rainbow (Starling Burgess design early on in her build phase and due to launch next year); Svea, a Tore Holm design that was never built at the time (in build now and due to launch next year) and Atlantis, a Frank Paine design also due for launching next year.
